Late in 1927, Howard Hughes began his World War One movie Hell’s Angels.  The movie starred Ben Lyon, James Hall and the platinum blond, Jean Harlow.

The other stars were the “stunt” pilots, Frank Clarke, Roscoe Turner, Garland Lincoln and at least 35 others from the Los Angeles and the San Francisco area.

Caddo refers to the pilot’s home airfield which was just northwest of old Los Angeles Metropolitan Airport, now Van Nuys.  Chatsworth, northwest of Los Angeles, was used as the German aerodrome.

The painting depicts “Jasta Caddo” on takeoff for the cameras.
