The Fokker D-VII was designed late in 1917 by Anthony Fokker and Reinhold Platz.  The D-VII became the mainstay of the German Air Force Jastas , or fighter squadrons.

Germany was prone to colorfully decorate their factory camouflaged aerial steeds.  Jasta 15 painted their noses red

and the fuselages a dark blue.  Ltn. d  R  Hugo Schaefer had what appeared to be a winged dragon painted on his  D-VII.
